George MacIntyre, the football coach at Vanderbilt from 1979 to 1985 and a national coach of the year in 1982, died on Tuesday at his home in Nashville. He was 76.
His son Matt confirmed his death. MacIntyre had been treated for multiple sclerosis for more than 20 years.
In 1982, his best season, Vanderbilt went 8-4, including 4-2 in the Southeastern Conference, and finished with a win in the Hall of Fame Classic, a bowl game in Birmingham, Ala. He was named the SEC coach of the year and received the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award, named in honor of the longtime Georgia Tech coach and given to a coach who demonstrates superior leadership on and off the field.
