Former USC Trojans and New York Giants star defensive end Gary Jeter died this week at the age of 61, according to Michael Eisen of Giants.com.
The cause of death has not been determined, per the New York Daily News' Ebenezer Samuel.
"This is the worst possible news," former Giants teammate Beasley Reece said, per Samuel. "This is a great loss for the Giants. We lost one of the good guys. A quality guy. A giant of a man who could not have been nicer. This defies all reason."
The Giants selected Jeter with the fifth pick in the 1977 NFL draft after he was a consensus All-American in 1976 at USC.
