NHL commissioner Gary Bettman on Wednesday upheld the 20-game suspension handed to Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman for cross-checking linesman Don Henderson into the boards during a game in January.

In his report, which was produced following a lengthy appeal process, Bettman said Wideman acknowledged the contact was the type to cause injury and couldn't explain his actions.
"The incident here did not involve anything that remotely resembled a 'hockey play.' Mr. Wideman skated nearly half the length of the ice, away from the play.
