From the archives: Even families of Villanova players doubted they could beat Georgetown

In 1985, the NCAA Tournament field expanded to 64 teams and its national title game went down as one of the biggest upsets in college basketball history. Villanova shot 78.6 percent from the field, including 9 of 10 in the second half to knock off defending champion Georgetown and its man in the middle, Patrick Ewing, 66-64. Ed Pinckney — the game’s MVP with 16 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists — said after losing to the Hoyas twice in the regular season that “our own families didn’t think we had a chance to win.
