Indians’ prospect Francisco Mejia walked off the field Saturday thinking his 49-game hitting streak was over. Then a post-game scoring change resuscitated the streak, and in the process established just the sixth 50-game hitting streak in professional baseball history. Here are the others:
Joe Wilhoit: 69 games, Wichita, 1919
Joe DiMaggio: 61 games, San Francisco, 1933
Joe DiMaggio: 56 games, New York, 1941
Roman Mejias: 55 games, Waco, 1954
Otto Pahlman: 50 games, Danville, 1922
Now, about that scoring change. A lot of people think Saturday’s play should’ve stayed in the books as an error to Winston-Salem’s third baseman and suspect the Lynchburg Hillcats’ scorer reversed his decision solely to keep the hometown player’s extraordinary streak alive.
