Tony Phillips, one of the most versatile players in baseball during his career, died of an apparent heart attack at 56, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Dave Stewart says he got the awful news this morning from Rickey Henderson. Stewart says Tony Phillips "was like my little brother."

Phillips played 18 seasons in the big leagues and is probably best known for his early days with the Oakland A’s.
