Somebody once said that, some Greek god or English scholar or famous general, probably misquoting an ancient proverb or something Shakespeare wrote. Or something like that.

Someone said it, or wrote it, and it got handed down and turned into a famous cliché. Now it's bandied about in such places as sports and war and, ahem, politics.
But there's some truth to it, too, especially on the playing field, where the pressure of things like championship trophies and playoff survival can cause athletes to do ill-advised things, things they might not normally do.
