The NHL on Wednesday suspended Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman 20 games for his check from behind last week on linesman Don Henderson.
Wideman's hearing with the league's department of hockey operations was Tuesday, and the NHL wasted little time in rendering its decision.

According to Sportsnet, commissioner Gary Bettman did not take part in the initial hearing and will handle the first appeal if Wideman, 32, chooses to take that route.
