Fifty years ago today, Jim Leyland was part of a historic feat as a player

Jim Leyland will go down in history as one of the greatest managers of his generation. But he was also part of history as a player. Leyland was a catcher for the team that pitched two no-hitters in one day.

“It was unbelievable, it still is to this day. It’s never happened before or since,” Leyland said.

Leyland and the Tigers’ Class A Rocky Mount Leafs affiliate were in Greensboro, N.C., on May 15, 1966, for a doubleheader against the Yankees’ farm club at War Memorial Stadium — “a nice ballpark” Leyland said.
