Former NFL players — despite increasing awareness of brain trauma and perceived anecdotal evidence to the contrary — are at no greater risk of committing suicide than the general U.S. population, according to a new study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (via USA Today).

Additionally, the study published this month in the American Journal of Sports Medicine found that the group of 3,439 retired players was significantly less likely than the population to die from cancer, heart disease and homicide.
