Eugenie Bouchard and Simona Halep Lose in First Round at Wimbledon

WIMBLEDON, England — A year ago, Eugenie Bouchard attained the pinnacle of her career by reaching the Wimbledon women’s singles final, where she fell to Petra Kvitova in a one-sided match.

But Bouchard may have discovered her low point at the same venue as her tennis form continues to spiral downward.

In the latest disappointment in a year of many, the 12th-seeded Bouchard was beaten by Ying-Ying Duan, a qualifier ranked 117th. Duan did not even have too much trouble in the match, winning, 7-6 (3), 6-4, in the first big upset of the tournament.
