Eugene Monroe retires from NFL, will remain 'vocal advocate' for medical marijuana

A month after being released by the Baltimore Ravens, medical marijuana advocate Eugene Monroe is retiring from the NFL.

"Today, I am making my exit from the game of football," he wrote in an article published Thursday on The Players' Tribune. "I’m leaving the sport I love — the sport that has consumed my existence for the last 18 years — to start a new life."

The 29-year-old tackle acknowledged that some might find his decision "puzzling," but said "I am thinking of my family first right now — and my health and my future.
