Essay: British Actors’ Broadway Run Includes Soccer and Baseball

This was not a true day off — the three actors had to perform in a matinee in a couple of hours a few blocks away at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater. But it was a holiday for Michael Elwyn, Rufus Wright and Geoffrey Beevers to sit at the bar of Hurley’s Saloon on a recent Sunday morning to watch their beloved Premier League football.

By night, Elwyn is Prime Minister Anthony Eden while Wright inhabits both Tony Blair and David Cameron to Helen Mirren’s Queen Elizabeth II in “The Audience.” Beevers plays the Equerry, a wry observer of the queen’s relationship with eight prime ministers that have shaped modern England during her reign.
