Tony Dungy, who will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in two weeks, is known as much for his coaching tree as for his coaching — several of his former assistants have moved into the NFL ranks, including as head coaches, and he has continued to mentor them.

Dungy is just one example of how essential Green is to the history of the NFL, and of how influential he was during the 35 years combined in which he coached in college and the pros. Green, who died early Friday, opened previously locked doors.
