The international ski federation is banning camera drones from its World Cup races after one of the flying objects crashed and nearly hit the Austrian skier Marcel Hirscher on Tuesday during a slalom race in Italy.
The ski federation, which is known by its French acronym F.I.S., will prohibit drones “as long as I am responsible,” the men’s race director Markus Waldner said Wednesday, a day after the night race in Madonna di Campiglio. Waldner said he made the decision “because they are a bad thing for safety.”
“It was huge luck that Marcel was not hurt,” Waldner added.
