Derek Stepan Scores a Stunner, but the Game’s Margin Is Not So Surprising

It almost had to come to this — another one-goal game for the Rangers after a litany of them in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

All 12 of the Rangers’ games this postseason, including three previous overtime wins before Wednesday night’s Game 7 against Washington, have been decided by the slimmest of margins.

On a night when five members of the 1993-94 Rangers, the franchise’s last team to win a Stanley Cup, were shown on the giant video board above center ice, Derek Stepan was able to conjure some more of that magic.

Those former players included Glenn Anderson, Adam Graves, Mark Messier and Mike Richter, as well as Stephane Matteau, who was the last Ranger to score a Game 7 overtime winner.
