INDIANAPOLIS – Two-time defending Indianapolis 500 pole-winner Ed Carpenter was unhurt in a violent airborne crash during a pre-qualifying morning practice on Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Carpenter’s No. 20 Chevrolet appeared to lose control out of Turn 2 and flipped over after striking the outside wall SAFER Barrier. He skidded to a stop at the end of a debris field. Carpenter was out of the car quickly and furiously threw his helmet inside an awaiting ambulance after walking to it.
