D-backs select Virginia first baseman Pavin Smith with No. 7 pick

PHOENIX — The Diamondbacks used the No. 7 pick in Monday’s MLB Draft to select University of Virginia first baseman Pavin Smith.

Smith, 21, was rated as Baseball America’s seventh-best prospect, while MLB.com had him as the eighth-best prospect.

The 6-foot-2, 210pound Smith hit 13 home runs and drove in a school-record 77 runs for Virginia in 2017 while batting .342. He walked 38 times, had a .427 on-base percentage and .570 slugging percentage. For his career, he totaled 28 home runs, a .325 batting average and 178 RBI in 178 games.

Smith bats and throws left-handed.
