Cubs 6, Cardinals 4: Cubs Hold Off Cardinals and Advance to the N.L.C.S.

For the first time in the franchise’s history, the Chicago Cubs won the clinching game of a postseason series at home, beating the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-4, on Tuesday in Game 4 of their National League division series.

Cubs starter Jason Hammel was pulled before recording an out in the fourth inning, having issued three walks and allowed three hits and two runs, but he still played a part in the victory, with a single in the second inning that provided Chicago’s first run. Javier Baez followed with a three-run homer off John Lackey to give the Cubs a 4-2 lead, and a strong effort by the bullpen and home runs by Anthony Rizzo and Kyle Schwarber helped secure the win over the Cardinals, a division rival.
