Cost of unexpected success? Potentially $175K, Colorado fans

The Colorado athletic department could wind up paying $175,000 in fines for jubilant fans rushing the field after victories by the surprising Pac-12 South champion Buffaloes, the Boulder Daily Camera reported.

Under a new conference rule, effective with the 2016-17 academic year, schools can be fined for fans rushing the field in football or the court in basketball before a 60-second cooling-off period meant to allow visiting teams not to get caught up in celebrations.

CU fans streamed onto the playing surface at Folsom Field after Saturday's victory over Utah clinched the Buffs' first Pac-12 Championship berth.
