College football player arrested after punching referee

An offensive lineman for a California community college was arrested Saturday on suspicion of battery after punching a referee during a game.

Bernard Schirmer, a freshman for Mount San Antonio College, punched the official as he broke up an argument between players in the game with Ventura College. As the unnamed referee walked Schirmer back to his huddle, Schirmer threw a punch, knocking the referee to the ground.

Trainers rushed out to tend to downed official, who he appeared "drowsy" as he left the field, according to Ventura College coach Steve Mooshagian.
