Colin Kaepernick can still win 49ers QB job; here's how

House money remains on Blaine Gabbert to come out of the preseason as the 49ers' starting quarterback. But Colin Kaepernick has time to go from bust to blackjack.

Despite Kaepernick having not played in a preseason game and trailing Gabbert all offseason because of thumb, knee and shoulder injuries, coach Chip Kelly has stopped short of naming his No. 1 for Week 1.

It's hard to declare a winner of a competition that hasn't begun. There's a good chance Kaepernick will play in Friday's critical third preseason game against the Packers, and a decent chance of him either starting or getting significant first-team work.
