Chase Utley of the Los Angeles Dodgers will more than likely be available to play Monday night in Game 3 of the team’s National League division series with the Mets at Citi Field, Utley is appealing a two-game suspension by Major League Baseball for what it determined was an illegal slide Saturday night into Mets shortstop Ruben Tejada, who broke his right leg on the play.
Major League Baseball had looked to expedite the appeal process with the players’ union, considering the urgent stakes of the postseason. But a person familiar with the situation said that it seemed highly unlikely that an appeal hearing could take place Monday, given the fact that the normal appeal process can take up to two weeks and that Utley’s suspension was not announced until Sunday night.
