Cardinals' level of concern 'high' over All-Star Matt Carpenter's oblique injury

The Cardinals are worried about Matt Carpenter.

Their All-Star infielder exited the team's 7-5 loss Wednesday to the Pirates with an injury to his right oblique muscle. He pulled up lame after checking a swing in the third inning. Carpenter, clutching his right side, shook his head in frustration as he was met by a team trainer before walking to the clubhouse.

After the game, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny expressed a "high level of concern" for Carpenter as the club awaited results from his MRI exam. Matheny termed the injury as a "strain.
