UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Alex Ovechkin skated out for warmups and snared the first puck he could find and fired it toward the Islander net. He missed.
But Ovechkin and his Washington Capitals teammates were on target when it mattered most Tuesday night at Nassau Coliseum. Ovechkin scored the Capitals’ lone goal in regulation, registered a game-high eight shots and assisted on Nicklas Backstrom’s overtime goal at 11 minutes 9 seconds as the Capitals evened the series 2-2 with a 2-1 victory.
The series returns to Washington Thursday for Game 5.
Cal Clutterbuck came within a whisker of putting the Islanders ahead midway through the third period, when he hit the post as the Islanders killed off a penalty to Anders Lee.
