That sound you hear? It's the approaching transactional hoofbeats of the Aug. 1 non-waiver trade deadline. That means the anyone having anything to do with baseball is busy dividing teams up into orderly throngs of buyers and sellers. The buyers, of course, have legitimate designs on the playoffs, while the sellers have no such hopes and are instead building toward a more palatable future.
Imagine, though, the third circle in the Venn diagram -- one that nicks the edges of the other two. We speak, of course, of the teams that ruin all this tidiness by having one foot in the contender bucket and one among the the hopeless.
