Mark Sanchez was brought in to Denver to take over the starting job from retired Peyton Manning. That never happened.
Instead, the journeyman quarterback was outplayed in the preseason by Trevor Siemian, a seventh-round pick last year. The Broncos selected former Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch in the first round of this year's draft and released Sanchez on Saturday, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. Sanchez is now expected to sign with the Cowboys, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Siemian had been named the Broncos starter for the 2016 season, which will begin Thursday with the defending Super Bowl champions hosting the Panthers.
