Two first-time Boston Marathon participants took home top honors Monday, with the men's race signaling the emergence of a potential new star in the sport.
Lemi Berhanu Hayle, a 21-year-old from Ethiopia, pulled away from two-time Boston champion Lelisa Desisa late for his first major marathon title in 2 hours, 12 minutes, 45 seconds. His countrywoman Atsede Baysa won the women's race in 2:29.19 after rallying in the final miles.
Hayle burst onto the international scene by winning the Dubai Marathon in 2015 and finished second there this year, but this was his first shot at a more elite field in Boston.
