The Mets have had some pretty impressive pitching debuts in recent years. Matt Harvey struck out 11 Diamondbacks in winning his first major league start in 2012. Zack Wheeler struck out seven Braves and pitched six shutout innings in 2013.
Now add Steven Matz to the list. Matz gave up two runs in seven and two-thirds innings in beating the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday. But he will be remembered more for the record he set with his bat.
Matz, who throws left and bats right, had a double and two singles in three trips to the plate.
