Everton director of football Kevin Thelwell will move to Rangers this summer to become Rangers' new sporting director, the two clubs have confirmed.

News of the 51-year-old Englishman's appointment came as Rangers confirmed officially for the first time that they are in negotiations with American investors, including the San Francisco 49ers, about a possible takeover of the club.

Rangers chief executive Patrick Stewart announced a root and branch review of all club operations earlier this season, with the Scottish Premiership club saying the appointment of a sporting director was a priority.

"Thelwell will assume overall responsibility for all areas of the football operation, including men's, women's and academy," they say in a website statement.
