When Chase Elliott snared the pole position for Sunday's Daytona 500, the opening race of his first full NASCAR Sprint Cup season, he was merely adding to what is becoming something of a tradition.

Three of the last four pole position winners — Elliott this season, Austin Dillon in 2014 and Danica Patrick in 2013 — were entering their first full season of Cup competition.
