Astros’ Yuli Gurriel Apologizes After a Racist Gesture Aimed at Yu Darvish

HOUSTON — The satisfaction the Houston Astros took in winning Game 3 of the World Series on Friday night had to compete with the fact that their first baseman, Yuli Gurriel, was caught on camera making a racist gesture in reference to Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Yu Darvish, who is from Japan.

Gurriel, who is from Cuba, had just homered off Darvish in the bottom of the second inning to give Houston a 1-0 lead over the Dodgers. As he sat in the dugout, he could be seen smiling and then raising his hands as if to stretch the side of his eyes, clearly referring to Darvish.
