American swimmer Anthony Ervin won the 50-meter freestyle on Friday night, becoming the oldest individual swimming gold medalist in Olympic history.
Ervin beat out France’s Florent Manaudou and fellow American Nathan Adrian for gold, posting a time of 21.40 in the sprint. He tied for gold in the event all the way back in 2000. He is now the oldest swimmer ever to win gold racing solo.
Ervin was also part of the American gold-winning team in the men’s 4x100 meter freestyle relay in Rio.
For added context, Ervin is four years older than Michael Phelps.
