Another Boys Title Signals a Bright Future for American Tennis

WIMBLEDON, England — After years of waiting for a men’s champion, American tennis suddenly has a glut of promising résumés piling up.

The latest belongs to Reilly Opelka, a Michigan-born 17-year-old who stands 6 feet 10 ½ inches and who won the Wimbledon boys’ singles title on Sunday, beating 12th-seeded Mikael Ymer of Sweden, 7-6 (5), 6-4, in the final.

The win by Opelka, who now lives in Palm Coast, Fla., follows triumphs by Americans at Wimbledon last year, when Noah Rubin defeated Stefan Kozlov in an all-American final for the boys’ title, and at the French Open last month, when Tommy Paul beat Taylor Harry Fritz in another meeting of Americans.
