Andrelton Simmons is heading to the disabled list for an extended period.
The Angels announced Monday that their shortstop will require surgery to repair a full thickness tear of the ulnar collateral ligament of his left thumb.
Simmons, who was acquired from the Braves last November, suffered the injury during Sunday's 3-1 loss to the Rays. Simmons hurt his left thumb while making a backhand diving stop of an Evan Longoria grounder in the third inning. Though Simmons jammed his glove into the turf at Angel Stadium, he did make a throw to first from his knees, but Longoria beat it out for an infield single.
