Andrew Luck of the Colts Retires From the N.F.L. After Spate of Injuries

Andrew Luck, the star quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts, abruptly retired from football on Saturday night in a stunning move for one of the league’s top franchise players.

Luck announced his retirement in a postgame news conference after the Colts played the Bears in a preseason game. Word of his retirement surfaced during the game in a report by ESPN.

The 29-year-old was the first pick in the 2012 draft and is in the third year of a five-year contract extension that pays him an average of $23.3 million a year.
