BROOKLYN – Amir Khan won the fight on Friday night but only time will tell if he won the battle.
For although the British welterweight contender (31-3) recorded an entertaining but comfortable unanimous points victory against Chris Algieri (20-2) at the Barclays Center, he finds himself again in boxing’s most frustrating yet tantalizing position.
Namely, he is at the mercy of the whims of Floyd Mayweather, with nothing to do but hang around to see if the pound-for-pound champion opts to fight him in September, an opportunity that has been hinted at by Mayweather and could likely be facilitated by their shared advisor Al Haymon.
