Canelo Alvarez was diagnosed on Monday with a fracture in his right thumb and will not fight again this year, Golden Boy Promotions announced.
Alvarez, the lineal middleweight world champion, moved down to the junior middleweight division and stopped England's Liam Smith to win a 154-pound world title on Saturday night before 51,240 at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, in Arlington, Texas.
Golden Boy spokesman Stefan Friedman said Alvarez visited hand specialist Dr. Pedro Jaime Lomeli in his hometown of Guadalajara, Mexico, and after undergoing X-rays and a CT scan was diagnosed with an avulsion fracture of the right thumb.
