Marco Estrada's rise to postseason ace for the Blue Jays has been unconventional. He wasn't a high draft pick or a high-profile free agent signing. He doesn't blow hitters away with a big fastball and a nasty breaking ball. He fits no stereotypes. Estrada is basically none of the things teams look for in a rotation headliner.
The 33-year-old Estrada was a sixth-round pick by the Nationals in 2005. Five years later he was claimed off waivers by the Brewers, and it wasn't until Zack Greinke broke a rib playing pickup basketball in 2011 spring training that Estrada got a long look.
