Alcides Edgardo Ghiggia, the Uruguayan soccer star who scored the late winning goal in a stunning 2-1 victory over host Brazil in the final game of the 1950 World Cup, died in Montevideo, Uruguay, on Thursday. He was 88.
The cause was a heart attack, his son Arcadio said.
Ghiggia’s goal broke a tie in the 79th minute, lifting Uruguay to its second World Cup title. Brazil had been expected to win the match, played in front of about 200,000 fans at the Maracanã stadium in Rio de Janeiro. A draw would have given Brazil the title.
