Air Force has confirmed that former star quarterback Dee Dowis was killed in an automobile accident on Monday morning in Atlanta. Dowis was 48.
A 2009 inductee to the Air Force Athletic Hall of Fame, he was the star of Fisher DeBerry's option offense and finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1989, the year Andre Ware won the award. During his career, Dowis set an NCAA record for rushing yards by a quarterback with 3,612 yards -- a record that stood until Antwan Randle-El broke it at Indiana.
Air Force confirmed the news on its official Twitter account and DeBerry commented on the tragic news in an interview with the Colorado Springs Gazette.
