Mexico fought and clawed its way to a 3-1 victory in a physical battle against Uruguay on Sunday at the Copa America in Phoenix, Ariz.
After taking a 1-0 lead on a Alvaro Pereira own goal in the fourth minute — the fastest own goal in Copa America history — it appeared El Tri was going to cruise to victory. But Uruguay, playing a man down after Matias Vecino was sent off with a red card just before halftime, came out aggressively in the second half.
Uruguay created a number of close chances in the second half, and ultimately found the back of the net in the 74th minute when captain Diego Godin charged a header past Alfredo Talavera, tying the game 1-1.
