SHEBOYGAN, Wis. — Just when you thought Jordan Spieth’s hopes of completing an “American Slam” of golf’s majors were dead, the young gun unfurled a star-spangled resuscitation.
Six birdies on the back nine vaulted Spieth back into contention during Saturday’s third round of the PGA Championship. He fired a 7-under par 65 to pull within two shots of leader Jason Day. He had two sets of three consecutive birdies over the final nine holes.
When he drained a 7-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th hole the Whistling Straits gallery went wild.
A round that started in stall mode revved through the finish line.
