Advantage Lyon after Dumornay bursts Arsenal bubble in Women’s Champions League semi

Arsenal’s bid for Champions League glory is hanging in the balance after they succumbed to a narrow first-leg defeat by eight-time winners Lyon.

It had looked as if Mariona Caldentey’s 78th-minute penalty was going to earn them a crucial draw to take to France next week after Kadidiatou Diani had put Lyon ahead in the first half. But the score was level for just four minutes before Melchie Dumornay restored their one-goal advantage.

Arsenal are still very much in the tie and will feel they should have come away with something, given the chances created.

Frida Maanum and Beth Mead were both guilty of wasting opportunities in front of goal while Lyon were clinical, which proved to be the difference.
