Former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez died at the age of 27 Wednesday morning after committing suicide in his prison cell.
The Massachusetts Department of Corrections released a statement on Hernandez's death, per ESPN's Michele Steele:
Hernandez was serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for the 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd, a semi-pro football player.
Hernandez's death came five days after he was found not guilty of the 2012 murders of Safiro Furtado and Daniel de Abreu outside a Boston nightclub.
The Bristol, Connecticut, native played three seasons with the Patriots after getting selected in the fourth round of the 2010 NFL draft out of Florida.
