6 impressive first-time Pocono finishes

Bubba Wallace will make his first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series start in Sunday’s Pocono 400 (1:30 ET, FS1) at Pocono Raceway, a/k/a “The Tricky Triangle.”

Pocono is a challenging track, one where it’s impossible to optimize handling for the three vastly different corners at the 2.5-mile circuit. In fact, just six drivers entered in Sunday’s race finished in the top 10 in their respective first Cup starts at Pocono, and just one of those six won. Here’s the list:

Ryan Blaney, 10th
6 Ryan Blaney, 10th
Kyle Larson, 5th
5 Kyle Larson, 5th
Chase Elliott, 4th
4 Chase Elliott, 4th
Kyle Busch, 4th
3 Kyle Busch, 4th
Jimmie Johnson, 3rd
2 Jimmie Johnson, 3rd

Hard to believe, perhaps, but Johnson didn’t win rookie-of-the-year honors in 2002 — Ryan Newman did.
