Roberta Vinci and Kristina Mladenovic were locked in a marathon game in the third set of their United States Open quarterfinal at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Before it was even over, Pam Shriver declared on ESPN that it was biggest game of their singles careers.
Vinci and Mladenovic have each won multiple Grand Slam titles in doubles, but the winner Tuesday would reach a major semifinal in singles for the first time.
With Mladenovic serving at 3-3 in the third set, they played a 26-point game that lasted nearly 16 minutes. Mladenovic had six game points she could not convert.
