PARIS — Serena Williams, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, and Naomi Osaka, the No. 1 women’s seed, were beaten in the third round of the French Open on Saturday.
Sofia Kenin’s 6-2, 7-5 win over Williams and Katerina Siniakova’s 6-4, 6-2 victory over Osaka underscored the wide-open nature of women’s tennis. Of the 32 seeds in Paris, 23 have been eliminated or have withdrawn before the fourth round. Eleven of the top 16 seeds are also out, although last year’s finalists — the champion Simona Halep and the runner-up Sloane Stephens — remain in contention.
