Wiard, Toledo women's basketball pull away to beat Miami in MAC opener

OXFORD, Ohio — With a lockdown defensive performance in the fourth quarter and a big night from Sophia Wiard, Toledo women’s basketball opened Mid-American Conference play with a 70-52 win at Miami (Ohio) on Wednesday night.

The Rockets (8-3, 1-0 MAC) outscored the RedHawks 19-7 in the final period to pull away, including a 12-0 run over the final 3:41. Wiard, a fifth-year guard, had a game-high 26 points for UT and was electric from beyond the arc, making 6 of 7 3-pointers. She also had a game-high eight assists.

Sammi Mikonowicz, a Rossford graduate, had 11 points for the Rockets.
