In late January when the University of Toledo officially hired Vince Kehres as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, he had no way of predicting what his first Division I offseason was going to look like.
Kehres, who spent the previous seven seasons as the head coach at Division III national powerhouse Mount Union, was on head coach Jason Candle’s staff for less than two months when the coronavirus pandemic shut the sports world down completely.
Reflecting back on his unconventional start in Toledo, Kehres said that he did his best to search for a positive perspective.
“I felt like we made the most of the opportunity,” Kehres said, “and that we did a good job of transitioning from hands-on learning in the meeting room and on the practice field to getting into Zoom and [Microsoft] Teams and being able to teach the guys the material, the defensive installations that we hadn't gotten to yet in spring practice.
